The Arts
At East Woods School, we provide a variety of enrichment programs designed to inspire curiosity and foster personal growth. These opportunities encourage students to explore new interests and develop skills in a supportive, nurturing environment.
Chorus
Chorus Class allows students to develop their vocal skills while learning the fundamentals of music theory, sight-singing, and ensemble performance. Students practice various choral techniques and refine their ability to harmonize. They also explore a wide range of musical genres, from classical to contemporary. Performance opportunities are vital to the experience, as students participate in concerts, local music festivals, and community events. These performances allow them to showcase their talents, build confidence, and collaborate with peers in a supportive and creative environment.
Drama
Drama Class is where creativity, expression, and teamwork come to life! In this dynamic, supportive, and safe environment, students explore the world of theater through acting, improvisation, and script analysis. We design our curriculum to foster confidence and collaboration, providing numerous performance opportunities throughout the year. From school plays to talent showcases, students can take the stage and experience the excitement of bringing stories to life for an audience. Both seasoned performers and those who are new to the world of drama will find a place to grow, learn, and shine!
Band
The music program offers a variety of instrumental courses for students to develop their musical skills and perform in different ensembles.
The 3rd Grade Recorder Ensemble is an introductory course to wind instruments and serves as a prerequisite for the Fourth Grade Band.
In the Fourth Grade Band, students are introduced to traditional brass, woodwind, or percussion instruments and learn to perform in an instrumental ensemble, playing Grade 1-2 literature at the Winter and Spring Concerts.
The Intermediate Band, available to students in grades 5-8, builds on these skills with a focus on technique and tone quality while playing Grade 1-2 literature, also performing twice a year at the Winter and Spring Concerts.
For students in grades 5-8, the Advanced Band is an audition-only group for those seeking a challenge, playing Grade 2 1/2 - 3 literature and performing at several events, including Parent’s Visiting Day, the Winter and Spring Concerts, and Graduation.
The Upper School Pit Orchestra, for students in grades 6-8, accompanies the cast of the Upper School Musical, performing Broadway music alongside local professional musicians. Students can join this ensemble by audition only and must be enrolled in the Intermediate or Advanced Bands with good academic standing.
Visual Arts
The Art Program at East Woods focuses on three main elements:
Art-making involves identifying the diverse and important features of various artistic approaches, examining why artists may follow or break from tradition, and exploring their perspectives on what constitutes "good art."
Visual literacy lets students become active initiators rather than passive receivers of image-based communication. They also understand how artists can convey messages, information, and meaning through the organization and presentation of images and images with text.
Creativity and innovation are critical to the value of visual art in our school curriculum. The Visual Arts program fosters innovative thought, leading to new understandings and helping individuals and cultures to advance.
