Every year, East Woods students embark on a scientific exploration which culminates at the Annual Science Symposium. Students in Nursery though Fourth Grade conduct scientific experiments designed to enrich and reinforce curriculum learning. In the Upper School, Fifth and Sixth Graders develop their own scientific experiments based on the scientific method, and students in Seventh and Eighth Grade perform independent experiments or write inquiry based research papers.
Under the supervision of East Woods' teachers Ms. Patricia Butt and Mr. John Daniello, Upper School students were challenged to create a science project and to present the findings on a display board that will be exhibited for the symposium on February 9, 2010. Students were given the opportunity to give a five-minute presentation on her or his project entry to a panel of scientists from the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The CSH scientists subsequently judge each student based on the layout, content and creativity of their display board and the quality of their oral presentation. The judges looked to see that the children had ownership of their project and could provide a thorough explanation. The students also had to answer questions. Some of the research topics judged by the scientists were memory, solar structure, E. coli, obesity and fast food, auditory vs. visual learning and the correlation between water pollution and breast cancer. According to Headmaster, Dr. Nathaniel Peirce, "Through this inquiry, our students learn valuable scientific research skills that may inspire a life-long journey of scientific discovery."
