East Woods School offers a variety of after-school programs to meet the enrichment needs of our students from Nursery through Ninth Grade. These programs invite positive relationships among children and adults, create engaging environments for student interaction and encourage children to make decisions and develop skills. Fees for enrichment programs vary with the program selected.

Lunch Bunch

The East Woods Lunch Bunch program for Early Childhood Center (ECC) children emphasizes play and socialization with an opportunity to take part in the planned activity for the day. Daily activities will run for approximately thirty minutes, and the children will not be required to participate. Activities include drawing, games and imaginative play. A part of each afternoon is set aside for outdoor play. The playground affords the children the opportunity to increase their motor skills as well as their social skills.

Lunch Bunch begins the first full Monday of school from noon to 3 pm and is available every day except Friday. Supervised by East Woods teachers and other professionals who direct the Activity of the Day.

Science Adventures

Children in K-2nd Grade may enroll in Science Adventures. Designed by the nationally known Science Enrichment Services, Inc., Science Adventures aims to motivate children to be curious about science, and to expand their interest in science throughout their years of education. Children learn fascinating science concepts through “hands on” experiments and take-home science projects, while sharing actively in science discovery. New topics are presented in three unique sessions.

Science Adventures classes are held on Fridays from 12:30 to 2pm.  Instructors are provided by Science Enrichment Services, Inc. Click here to register.

New Horizons

Children in Grades K-4 may participate in the New Horizons extended day program – offering classes in fine and performing arts, sports and nature exploration. Each class is designed to encourage individual potential through social interaction and physical activity, as well as artistic expression. New Horizons choices include chess taught by a nationally rated chess master, and The Animal Kingdom with experts from the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary, as well as ceramics, dance and movement, publishing, drums and piano and karate.

New Horizons classes are held Monday through Thursday from 3 to 4 pm. Instructors include both East Woods faculty and experts in selected subjects.

Scrabble Club

Students in Second through Ninth Grade have the opportunity to join the East Woods Scrabble Club.  Scrabble sessions are held on Mondays after-school. Second through fourth graders meet from 3 to 4 pm; fifth through ninth graders meet from 4 to 5 pm.

Think Tank

Think Tank gives 3rd-5th Graders additional opportunities to strengthen their foundation of science literacy. The program enhances the in-school science experience through dynamic hands-on classes that not only teach basic science concepts, but also foster the joy of science. Students explore the world of physics, biology and chemistry through a variety of experiments and activities. Classes involve exploring East Woods’ indoor and outdoor campus as well as the local environs.

Think Tank classes are taught by East Woods faculty on selected Fridays from 12:30 to 2:30 pm.

ALPs

The after-school ALPs program offers a weekly two-hour forum in which enthusiastic qualified students in 3rd-9th Grade may satisfy their appetite for science exploration. Students are immersed in fast-paced, real-world investigations relating to molecular biology, genetics and technology. In a way that few students will experience until college, program participants explore their subject interest through such interdisciplinary tasks as assembling a stock portfolio, producing short video presentations, creating their own civilization or building a six-foot model of the Brooklyn Bridge – the joy is in the endeavor.

Additional ALPs opportunities include establishing a one-on-one mentor relationship with an accomplished math, science or language arts teacher to address each student’s individual skills or interests. Program participants demonstrate the highest level of motivation and self-discipline.

After School ALPs sessions are two hours weekly. The program is provided by Jane Powel, founder of Cold Spring Harbor Academics, and her staff of science and math professionals in collaboration with East Woods faculty.
