Upper School

We are extremely proud of the diverse and challenging academic, athletic and extracurricular programs offered to our student body in the Upper School. In a nurturing environment, we encourage each student to develop creatively, be intellectually curious and have a lifelong passion for learning. The Upper School programs help develop the whole student, while he/she gains a sense of self-worth, achieves academic success, forms positive physical fitness habits and becomes a leader within the community. Avoiding a high school extension of the program, East Woods students can excel in an environment without social pressures from pre-college adolescents.

The Upper School curriculum is geared toward challenging the students to become leaders, acute students and remarkable citizens. Through the core curriculum, which includes math, English, foreign language, Latin (Seventh and Eighth Grade), history and science, students develop the essential skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening and thinking in all disciplines. Technology classes, fine and performing art programs, ALPs and band and chorus make for well-rounded students. We initiate a traditional letter grading system in Fifth Grade to mark students’ performance and effort. This helps our students gauge their work ethic and knowledge of the curriculum.

Our Upper School students play on sports teams, produce a major theater production and participate in community service projects. Throughout the school year, interscholastic athletics help develop teamwork and physical fitness skills. From January through March, the students spend an hour per day focusing on producing a major theatrical performance with every student participating in acting, music production or stage design. Our local, national and international community service activities enable our students to be cognoscente of the world around us and help support programs such as UNICEF, Save the Children, the Service League of Oyster Bay and Huntington tutoring program.

As coaches, mentors and advisors, the Upper School teachers form lasting relationships that continue throughout a student’s life. Whether they are dining with students, holding extra help sessions or coaching athletic skills, the teachers encourage their students to make meaningful goals and strive for personal fulfillment and success. You will not find a more dedicated faculty!

With parents, faculty and students interacting to attain the best possible education for the students, everyone is invested in the community. As many Heads of secondary schools have commented, East Woods students are prepared, focused and engaged in the learning process and the world around them.
