Reading requirements for the summer begin for students entering 3rd Grade in September.  In addition to reading, there is an accompanying writing component for each grade.  All written assignments will be collected by the teachers during the first week of school in September. The titles in bold print represent additions to this year's list.

Entering 3rd Grade
Students must read one of the selections below:

The Hidden Stairs and the Magic Carpet (Secrets of Droon, #1) by Tony Abbott
Happy Go Lucky (Big Apple Barn) by Kristin Earhart
Twister Trouble (The Magic School Bus, Book #5) by Ann Schreiber

In addition, students are to read 2 additional books.  Click here for additional lists of other appropriate suggested titles.

Students are also required to complete an activity and rubric (please see link for activity packet) for each of the 3 books read. The packet is in the form of a PDF file, which must be printed. Students are encouraged to keep a reading log for each book read during the summer.

 Entering 4th Grade
Students must read one of the selections below:

The BFG by Roald Dahl
Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson
Clementine by Sara Pennypacker
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
The War with Grandpa by Robert Kimmel Smith

Students are also required to keep a journal of books read over the summer. After completing each of the 3 books, the journal entry should include the following:

• The title, author and date completed
• A brief plot summary (1 paragraph)
• A reaction to the book (1 paragraph)

Students who read more than three books should list the titles and authors of the other books in their journals.

Entering 5th Grade
Students must read one of the selections below:

The Slave Dancer by Paula Fox
Stowaway by Karen Hesse
Island of the Blue Dolphins  or
(the sequel) Zia by Scott O’Dell
Hatchet by Gary Paulsen

The Summer Reading assignments will be collected the first week of school and evaluated as part of the English effort grade for the first term.  In addition, the students will have a graded writing assignment based on the required book during the first full week of school.

For each of the four books, students will type at least three paragraphs, font size 12, type style Times New Roman:

Paragraph 1- Brief Plot Summary (minimum of 5 sentences)
Paragraph 2- Choose a character or event in the book that you found particularly interesting or important to the plot.  Describe that character or event, in detail.
Paragraph 3- What was your opinion of the book? Be specific about why you liked it or not.

Students who read more than four books should only list the titles and authors of the other books on a separate typed piece of paper.

Entering 7th Grade
Students must read one of the selections below:

The required reading assignment for this summer will be integrated with the Eighth Grade Multimedia Project. Each student will read a fiction title connected to a particular era in American history, from the Civil War to the present. The books will introduce the time periods that the students will then research in the fall for their papers and PowerPoint presentations. The students have chosen from a pre-selected list.

 Entering 9th Grade
Students must read one of the selections below:
