DATABASE DESCRIPTIONS

BrainPOP and BrainPOP Jr.
"BrainPOP creates animated, curriculum-based content that supports educators and engages students. BrainPOP is used in numerous ways, from introducing a new lesson or topic to illustrating complex subject matter to reviewing before a test. BrainPOP Jr. specializes in resources for K-3."

EBSCO

EBSCOhost research databases include MasterFILE Select - a Full Text magazine collection, a General Science Collection, TOPICsearch - a current events database, as well as others. There are also portals especially designed for younger students.

 Grolier Online
This suite of online reference sources includes two different encyclopedia sets: The New Book of Knowledge Online and Encyclopedia Americana Online. In addition, there are two comprehensive databases: America the Beautiful Online (great for state reports), and Lands and Peoples Online (for country and culture information). **New this year: Toggle back and forth between 2 interfaces: The Grolier Passport interface for grades 5 and up and the simplified Grolier Kids interface for students in grades 3-5. Simply click on the upper right corner of the screen to go back and forth. The Find it Fast search box, located at the top of both home pages, enables users to search all databases at the same time. Rounding out the collection, are an atlas with 900 maps, seven dictionaries and thesauri, and current events headlines.


NOVEL
The New York Online Virtual Electronic Library (NOVEL) is a statewide virtual library provided free to the public by the New York State Library. It is a collection of several useful Infotrac databases including Health Reference, Business, Junior Periodicals, Twayne Author Series, New York State Newspapers (including The New York Times), and more.


Opposing Viewpoints Resource Center
This database from Gale Products offers students information on current social issues and is an invaluable tool for researching debate topics. Students can choose from the list of topics, or enter a search term to access viewpoint articles, topic overviews, statistics, primary documents, links to Web sites, and full-text magazine and newspaper articles. Updated daily.



Student Resource Center
The Student Resource Center by Gale Products has a new interface. It offers reference essays, magazine, journal and newspaper articles, primary source documents, and multimedia files. Students can enter search terms and search simultaneously through many different collections. Great features include a trio of dictionaries and curriculum-based "Topic trees", including U.S. History, Literature, and Science. Updated daily.

OTHER LIBRARY CATALOGS

Nassau: Automated Library Information System Web Catalog
Nassau County residents may use the online catalog and may also use their home library's online databases. Depending on your home library, there are great reference collections and databases that may be accessed with a public library card. Click on "Nassau Libraries" to find the directory of Nassau County libraries and have your library card available. You will need to enter the barcode on your card before searching within the library's databases.
