Homework Tutors At The Family Service League & Visiting Seniors At The Harbor House Assisted Living
Mondays After Sports for students in Sixth-Eighth Grade
For the eighth year, the sixth through eighth grade students have the opportunity to be homework tutors at The Family Service League in Huntington Station. Children age five and up will come to the center to receive one-on-one help with their homework or any academic subjects. In addition, last spring, we added a new program, the Harbor House Assisted Living in Oyster Bay. Our students will be visiting with the seniors at the assisted living center. They will be playing games, engaging in conversation and reading to and with the seniors.
The success of the project depends on the seriousness of our students’ commitment -- the young students expect their tutors to be there every other Monday and the seniors will be looking forward to the companionship. East Woods students will commit to participate either every other week or every week (on Monday) at the location of their choice.

Six students will leave East Woods promptly after sports. Should students be volunteering at The Family Service League in Huntington Station, pick up will be at 5:20 p.m. at the center, or 5:40 p.m. at East Woods.

Students who volunteer at the Harbor House Assisted Living Center should be picked up there at 4:45 p.m., or 4:55 p.m. at East Woods.

If your child would like to participate in this exceptional opportunity to help others, he or she will have to sign up as such on the attendance sheet and provide the pick-up place as well as an emergency phone number.

Monday Community Service program will start again on April 16, 2012 for the spring term.

Jacob's Light
Let's remember our soldiers. Many brave men and women put their lives at risk and make huge sacrifices as they serve in the United States Military in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each month a charitable organization, Jacob's Light, packages 9,000 lbs. of toiletries and nonperishable food and sends care packages to our soldiers overseas.
The organization was founded by Mrs. Kenny after her son Jacob,a young man from Long Island, was killed in a road side bombing in Iraq. Mrs. Kenny has asked me to collect short notes, children's drawings, letters or newspaper clippings that can be placed in each care package. The soldiers appreciate hearing from "home" and enjoy any mail that connects them to our country. As we enjoy a beautiful autumn day, a ball game, dinner with our family or simply reading the newspaper, LET'S REMEMBER OUR SOLDIERS. Please take the time to jot a quick note to a soldier, let them know you are grateful for all they do. Maybe tell them about current events or sports updates. You could share a joke, a story or anything that comes to mind. Perhaps you can ask a small child to draw a picture. I'm asking the grown ups and children of the East Woods community to help. Drop off all letters in Madame's room. Thank you for remembering.
