Fire Island Lighthouse Field Trip

The Fourth Graders are awed by the impressive lighthouse as they arrive at Fire Island.

On Thursday, September 22 the fourth graders went on their first field trip. The students, with their teacher, Mrs. Danielle Rosenthal, traveled to the Fire Island Lighthouse. Before the trip, the class read Vivian Farrell’s book, "Robert’s Tall Friend", a historical fiction book about a real boy, Robert Norris, who used to live at the lighthouse.
The field trip to Fire Island allowed the class to see and experience a lighthouse firsthand. Studying about Fire Island and the lighthouse also corresponds to the Fourth grade study of Long Island. The class was able to climb to the top of the lighthouse and see New York City, Great South Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, their tour guide taught the students about the U.S. Lifesaving Service and how they rescued shipwrecked sailors before the lighthouse was built.
It was a nice day to be outdoors and learn about history. As a culminating project, each student designed, named, and colored their own lighthouse. Stop by the classroom to see them!
