On Friday, April 15, 2011, East Woods School hosted the second annual student art contest to benefit The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Metro New York at The Heckscher Museum of Art in Huntington. The art contest and charity event was the result of the efforts of many people in the EWS community, including EWS Board of Trustees members and parents, Blake Hanson '70 and Ora Kriegstein, Director of Marketing, Kara Sweeney, Band director, Paul Oechslin, Art teacher, Marie Ucci, and Community Service Director, Martine Tawaji.
East Woods invited all schools in the greater Huntington/Oyster Bay area to participate in the “Magic Carpet Ride” art contest designed by Ms. Ucci. Participating schools included, East Woods School, Goose Hill School of Cold Spring Harbor, The Green Vale School, James H. Vernon School of Oyster Bay-East Norwich, Paumonok Elementary of Dix Hills, Portledge School, Thomas J. Lahey of Harborfields, and Harry B. Thompson and the Village School of Syosset.
On the evening of the benefit reception, the artwork of over 250 participants in grades 1-7, were on display at The Heckscher Museum. Prizes were awarded to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for Grades 1-4 and Grades 5-7, as well as honorable mentions for each grade level.

Grades 5-7 Winners: 1st “Help Haiti” by Marisa Ben-Yoshay, 7th grader from Harry B Thompson MS 2nd “Night City” by Katie Niki, 5th grader from the Village Elementary 3rd “Italy and India” by Khatija Jaffer, 7th grader from Harry B Thompson MS
Honorable mentions included: “Texas with My Friend” by East Woods School’s 1st grader, Izzy Waldorf; “Trip to India” by East Woods School’s 2nd grader, Parys Tyus; “Chocolate World” by Vernon School’s 3rd grader, Jayla Lee; “Italy Adventure” by East Woods School’s 4th grader, Timber Jean Zino; “Magic Carpet Ride to Brazil” by Vernon School’s 5th grader, Cristian Garcia; “Jackie Chan” by Vernon School’s 6th grader, Michelle Yu; and, “Disney World” by Thompson Middle School’s 7th grader, Jasmine Wong.
The evening would not have been complete without a fabulous performance by the EWS Rhythm and Blues Band, led by Mr. O, and the support of the EWS community service volunteers, who were under the guidance of Madame Martine Tawaji. In addition, the Make-A-Wish Foundation presented EWS with an award recognizing their support of the foundation and community. |
