Second Grade World Map Day was held on Friday, January 21. World Map Day culminates the Second Grade’s study of the seven continents, oceans, and the world map. The students spend a month researching wildlife, history, geography, cultures and languages from around the world. They then construct a large, three-dimensional version of the world map on the gym floor. After the creation of the map, the students, dressed in costumes that represent their continents, present to their parents and to the school in song and verse what they learned about during their research and exploration of the world map. It is a wonderful project that requires a great deal of preparation by the students. As a special treat this year, a group of five second grade music students played the ‘Olympic Theme’ on their instruments as the rest of the second grade students marched around the giant map holding flags from around the world. Thank you to Mrs. Bartlett and Mrs. Lang for all of their great work preparing the students for the presentation, and thank you to Mr. O for the music and for working with the second grade musicians. EWS would also like to thank the second grade parents for helping with the construction of the World Map. |
