                                                                                February 15, 2012

Dear Parents:

I am so excited to share final plans for the eighth grade trip to see “War Horse” atLincolnCenter’s Vivian Beaumont Theater. The eighth grade has connected the hit, “War Horse” with our current unit of study, World War 1, and it will be an experience they will remember. The class is currently exploring, in depth, where 19thCentury warfare technique morphed with 20thcentury warfare technology, and helps explain, why 20 million people were slaughtered during the “war to end all wars.”

“War Horse,” with great puppetry, tells the story of Albert and his beloved horse, Joey. As the war commences, he is sold to the military and sent toFranceand thrust into horrific combat that defined World War 1. Albert, too young to join the fight is obsessed with the mission to find Joey and get him home. The show is a multi-tissue tearjerker. I have enclosed a few reviews at the end of my letter from the numerous rave reviews that the five Tony Award winner, including Best Play, has received.

The date of the show is Saturday, February 25.th As we have a full day and our restaurant asked that we arrive extra early, we will be taking an early train. As part of the day, Ms Brunetti along with my son Paul, music major and current music teacher in the Bronx will lead a discussion about the spectacularLincolnCenter’s significance. We will meet at the Syosset railroad station at 8:45 a.m. Because we will also be traveling by New York City subway which is very unpredictable, we will give you two pick up scenarios. Plan A, Pick up will be 6:17 p.m, and Plan B, 6:44 p.m. Please be certain to be near a phone because your child will call as soon as we are settled on a train.

As though the day is not full enough, we will have lunch at a wonderful Italian restaurant, Il Violino, located on65thStreet.

The class is in for a treat of a lifetime. Experiencing “War Horse” while studying World War 1 in depth will be an experience that students can treasure and never forget. What a great time to be an eighth grade student at East Woods School. I am very proud to offer this extraordinary opportunity.
