Theater Club!
The East Woods Theater Club gives students in Seventh through Ninth Grades an opportunity to see major Broadway and Off-Broadway shows. Students commit themselves to one show at a time. When becoming involved in The East Woods Theater Club, some students have chosen to attend all of the shows, while others attend only a few. Participation in the club is purely voluntary.
The club goes into the city four times per year. We have had the good fortune to experience many wonderful and exciting performances through the years. For example, for all of the trips during the season, we take students for lunch. We have had lunch at some of New York’s most famous attractions such as Ginger’s, The All-Star Café, ESPN Zone, Chinatown, Little Italy, John’ Pizzeria and the Jekyll and Hyde Club.
Some of the shows that we have seen through the years are “Cats,” “Les Miserables,” “The Lion King,” “All Shook Up,” “Good Vibrations,” “Spelling Bee,” “Catch Me If You Can,” “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Annie,” “Mary Poppins,” “Saturday Night Fever,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “In The Heights,” “Rain,” “Footloose,” “Spiderman,” “Wicked,” and “Jersey Boys.” On occasion cast members from the shows join us at the end of the show to greet the students. The cast members discuss the show, life in the theater and address the many interesting questions students present. Some of the stars whom we have met are Rosie O’Donnell, John Stamos, Tony Randall, Lynn Redgrave, Rob Lowe, Sebastian Arcelus (Green Vale alumnus) and Bill Irwin. Also, we have met the casts from “Les Miserables,” “Good Vibrations,” “In The Heights,” “Titanic,” “Joseph,” “Tommy” and “Memphis.”
It is so wonderful to see the excitement and enthusiasm expressed by East Woods students. Cece Hopkinson sums it up well: “Theatre Club is an unforgettableweekend experience where on certain Saturdays I can be with my friends while going to see an amazing performance on Broadway. We also get to go to aNew York Cityrestaurant, one of the best eating experiences in the world! It is a ton of fun, and I look forward to every trip we go on.”
