- ISE Chess Tournament, April 3, 2009
On April 3, 2009, the third and last ISE Chess Tournament of the year took place at Green Vale. EWS Kindergarten student Galen Deane won first place in the K-2 category. In the 5-9 category, EWS Upper School students Jesse Wilensky won second place, Nathaniel Hogg won sixth place and Pete Hopkinson won seventh place.
EWS fifth grader Zachary Toner won first place overall for Grade 5 for the 2008-2009 ISE chess tournament season.
- NY State Chess Championship, March 1, 2009
East Woods sixth grader Anthony Cortese placed first at the New York State Chess Championship at Saratoga, NY, March 1, 2009. Anthony also received the eighth place school trophy along with fellow sixth grader Jesse Wilensky.
- ISE Chess Tournament, January 30, 2009
On January 30, 2009, the second ISE Chess Tournament of the year was held at East Woods. Chess players in Kindergarten through Ninth Grade from East Woods, Friends Academy, Green Vale, LuHi and Portledge competed. East Woods won both the Kindergarten and Fifth-Ninth Grade team categories. Thank you to all of the players who participated and showed excellent sportsmanship. - National K-12 Scholastic Chess Championship, December 12-14, 2008
Congratulations to several members of the East Woods School Chess Team who competed in the National K-12 Scholastic Chess Championship in Lake Buena Vista, Florida on December 12-14, 2008.
In the seventh grade, the EWS team (Pete Hopkinson, Nathaniel Hogg and David Levine) came in 6th out of 14 school teams. Individually, out of 100 students, Pete Hopkinson finished 43rd , Nathaniel Hogg finished 65th and David Levine finished 66th.
In the sixth grade, the EWS team (Anthony Cortese, David Lustberg, William Sheeline and Jesse Wilensky) came in 6th out of 24 teams. Individually, out of 152 participants, Anthony Cortese came in 13th, Jesse Wilensky placed 75th, William Sheeline came in 105th and David Lustberg placed 110th.
