Building Good Character One Month at a Time

"Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."

- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

At East Woods, our mission is to foster strength of character and academic excellence while developing and encouraging creativity, intellectual curiosity and a lifelong passion for learning. We are a nurturing community that celebrates the differences among us and leads by example through citizenship and service to others.

This year in library, students in Nursery through Fourth Grade will soon begin an integrated program to emphasize one trait of good character each month.

Our program will build upon the Character Counts! model of Character Education developed by the Josephson Institute Center for Youth Ethics. The Institute's core ethical values transcend religious, political and cultural differences and are called the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. In addition, we will begin with the universal theme of Friendship.

Through weekly activities and literature connections, we hope to help children develop their strengths to become a caring community of good thinkers and citizens and make the world a better place.
