Foreign Language: Upper School

Foreign language study at East Woods School is designed to enhance the student's personal education in many ways. First, by studying a new linguistic system, one can gain a truly objective view of one's own native language. Second, because of the interdependence of language and culture, a true understanding of the different cultures of the world can only be achieved as second language acquisition takes place. Third, to be richly prepared for a future worldwide neighborhood, students need to have the linguistic and cultural insights that come with foreign language study.

With this philosophy in mind, the foreign language department has set the following goals for language study:

  • to be able to communicate in the language of choice -- French, Latin or Spanish
  • dependent upon their level of study, students of Latin should be able to understand, interpret and translate the written language
  • in the modern languages, students should also be able to understand and express themselves in the spoken language
  • to gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures
  • beginning foreign language students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of the traditions and daily life of other cultures. More advanced students should understand and appreciate the literary and artistic expressions of the cultures being studied
  • to connect foreign language study with other disciplines and develop an interdisciplinary approach in the acquisition of information
  • in subject areas such as History, Geography, Social Studies and the Fine Arts, students should gain an intercultural understanding and sharpen their knowledge by connecting that subject with foreign language study
  • to develop insight into one's own language and culture
students should recognize that different languages and cultures use different patterns to communicate and can apply this knowledge to their own language
  • to prepare students to participate in multilingual communities and a global society and to feel comfortable using the language beyond the school setting by using it for personal enrichment as well as for leisure and travel
