| Madame Tawaji Teaches French to Seventh Grade Students |
Foreign language study at East Woods School is designed to enhance the student's personal education in many ways. First, by studying a new linguistic system, one can gain a truly objective view of one's own native language. Second, because of the interdependence of language and culture, a true understanding of the different cultures of the world can only be achieved as second language acquisition takes place. Third, to be richly prepared for a future worldwide neighborhood, students need to have the linguistic and cultural insights that come with foreign language study.
East Woods students begin Spanish instruction in Kindergarten, and continue learning Spanish throughout Lower School. In Fifth Grade, foreign language offers the students an introductory program in French and a Spanish program commensurate with their skill level from previous years’ experiences. Each language course covers one-half year. In Sixth Grade, students elect to study either French or Spanish, and will continue to learn their language of choice through Ninth Grade. Latin instruction begins in Seventh Grade and continues in Eighth Grade.
