Fourth Grade is a unique year at East Woods School and acts as the bridge between the Lower School and the Upper School experiences.
In language arts, the students continue to develop their love and appreciation for literature. The classroom novels often relate to the social studies curriculum. During the reading of each book the focus is on plot development, character analysis, comprehension, interpretation and application gained through discussion, written assignments, and creative projects. Throughout the year the students experience different types of writing: personal narratives, expository, and creative writing to name a few.
In the math curriculum, fourth grade students continue to master the four operations of math. Lessons are taught with differentiated instruction with the use of manipulatives, activities, and games. There is also a heavy focus on critical thinking skills and logical reasoning. Students are encouraged to draw parallels in their learning to real world mathematical situations.
The science curriculum explores four main areas of science; Earth science, life science and physical science. Topics covered include minerals and rocks, changes to the Earth’s surface, natural resources, heat, electricity and magnetism, and plant and animal studies. Students engage in many science projects and experiments on a weekly basis in our new state-of-the-art Science Laboratory. The fourth graders’ work is exhibited in a yearly school-wide Science Symposium.
In social studies, we cover Long Island, New York State, the regions of the United States, and westward expansion. The social studies curriculum is enriched with several exciting field trips: Fire Island Lighthouse, Stony Brook Schoolhouse, Epenetus Smith Inn, Joseph Lloyd Manor, and DNA Learning Center. Also, in conjunction with the fourth grade science curriculum, the students go on their first overnight trip to Caumsett State Park. At the conclusion of the year, the fourth grade offers a “Travel Log” presentation to parents and the student body. During this presentation, the students narrate a power point presentation highlighting the many field trips that enrich the curriculum.
Character development and community service are also heavily stressed in fourth grade. Each month, we focus on a different character theme (such as self-respect, responsibility, kindness, etc.). Through literature, class discussions, and hands on activities, the children are able to grasp the meaning of these concepts and incorporate them into their lives. The fourth grade class is responsible to generate a “Character Tip of the Week” which is presented during the Friday morning student body assemblies. The fourth grade also participants in various community service projects. Some of the past projects include reforestation through the Arbor Day Foundation, the collection of Halloween candy for U.S. troops, and the collection of and writing of holiday cards for the troops.
The fourth grade is an exciting year at East Woods School and I am thrilled to be taking this journey with your children! Here’s to a fantastic year!
