East Woods School seeks to instill in each student a lifelong love of learning and an appreciation of self-worth. A supportive and caring faculty encourages students to meet challenges, strive for personal success and recognize their own strengths and learning styles. The small class size and advantageous student/teacher ratio ensures individual attention, hands-on discovery, team teaching and a supportive and respectful atmosphere. Learning to value one another and the world we share is intrinsic to the curriculum at all levels. Leadership opportunities abound.

The school is divided into three divisions, Early Childhood (ECC), Nursery through Pre-Kindergarten, Lower School, Kindergarten through Fourth Grade and Upper School, Fifth through Ninth Grade. The Early Childhood Program addresses the social, emotional, physical, creative and intellectual development of young children. Storytelling and role-playing stimulate a child’s natural curiosity while educational games develop the building blocks for vital studies. Ultimately, the program aims to make children happy, curious and eager to learn. Students in Lower School focus on the concepts and techniques for reading, writing, math and science, as well as social studies, history, physical education and the arts. Students are introduced to Spanish as their first foreign language and begin lessons in industrial arts. Teachers evaluate student progress in all subjects. In the Upper School, traditional letter grades mark academic performance and honor rolls reward effort, achievement and citizenship. Students select a modern language (French is introduced in Fifth Grade) to accompany Latin (mandatory for Seventh and Eighth Grades) and learn the concepts of team play in junior varsity and varsity interscholastic athletics.

The exciting multi-disciplinary curriculum is literacy based in all grades, and public speaking is encouraged throughout. The visual and performing arts begin in the Early Childhood Program and build through Ninth Grade. Integration of technology becomes more sophisticated with each grade. Academics go well beyond the classroom – with off-campus trips and other meaningful programs. Inter-age activities create a strong school spirit and mutual respect among students.
East Woods School strives to prepare the young minds entrusted with our care with the critical thinking skills to meet any challenge – whether academic, ethical or personal – in a way that respects each child’s abilities and individuality.
