About East Woods

East Woods’ close-knit Nursery through Ninth Grade environment provides a strong and consistent early childhood, elementary and middle school experience. The school is small by design enabling the school to reach every child and facilitate inter-age activities that foster school spirit, confidence, compassion, leadership qualities and mutual respect. Our alumni/ae consistently confirm the lasting value of their East Woods education.

Our Mission

East Woods mission is to foster strength of character and academic excellence while developing and encouraging creativity, intellectual curiosity and a lifelong passion for learning. We are a nurturing community that celebrates the differences among us and leads by example through citizenship and service to others.

Academic Excellence

East Woods has a superior faculty that understands and celebrates the special characteristics, interests and curiosity of children. Our teachers get to know the intellectual, creative, social, physical and emotional qualities of their individual students. They encourage and assist children to stretch their abilities to meet challenges and achieve their fullest potential. Small class size and advantageous student/teacher ratio encourage hands-on discovery, with team teaching and an exciting multi-disciplinary curriculum.

Character Development

East Woods students learn very early that they are responsible for their learning and behavior and that they are respected and valued members of the school community. Students and teachers eat lunch together, discussing ideas, opinions, hopes and concerns in a relaxed setting. East Woods capitalizes on the close connection between students and faculty to help develop students’ responsible decision making. Informed by a spirit of tolerance and compassion, this emphasis on character is intrinsic to our curriculum throughout the grade levels. In our community service programs and life issues lessons, we further cultivate respect and concern for all people and the world we share.

Accessibility

The bonds between students, parents, faculty and administration make East Woods an inviting academic community. One of the many concrete signs of our faculty’s commitment and responsiveness to students and parents is the headmaster’s and teachers’ open door policy. To ensure the richest possible educational experience East Woods encourages frequent communication between parents, students, teachers and administration. In support of this, the East Woods Advisory Program partners each student in Sixth through Ninth Grade with a faculty member who works closely with the student, parents and other teachers to ensure that the student is on the right track.

Support

East Woods sets high academic goals and provides students with the tools to reach them. The Learning Center staff is available to work closely with students and teachers to develop study strategies and teaching techniques suited to each learning style. The center provides testing to clarify individual learning profiles and coordinates information and resources to deepen the school’s knowledge of each child. It also offers tutoring and facilitates communication between students, parents and teachers.
